First Responder Training

With the advent of Health and Safety Legislation in Barbados and the ever increasing number of persons with chronic lifestyle diseases within the workforce, the need for timely and appropriate responses to emergencies within the work place should now take priority and occupy the focus of Human Resource Practitioners in every organization.

Employees with basic training in health and safety related matters are assets to any organization. These individuals work with safety at the forefront of their actions and this significantly minimizes the risk of injury to themselves and fellow employees. Conversely, if an accident or incident occurs, they are trained to respond and can save a life or limb until further medical help arrives.

One of Body Matters' core competences is helping corporate organizations meet their health and safety obligations by providing First Responder Training within the work place. This training is site specific and covers major and minor medical emergencies as well as the practical skills necessary to sustain life or prevent further injury until advance medical help arrives. The objectives of the First Responder Training Course is as follows:

  • Train employees to respond in a timely and appropriate manner during a minor or major emergency.
  • Minimize the risk of serious injury and threat to limb and/or life within the work place.
  • Assist in the development of an emergency response team for the work place.
  • Assist with the management of strategic areas for the placement of First Aid post within the work environment.

This three (3) day course entails general first responder training material with emphasis on subject matters deemed relevant and site specific to the organization. The contents of this course meet the requirements outlined by the American Heart and Stroke Association for certification as a Basic Heart Saver/ First Aid Provider.

Each class will have a maximum of twelve persons. The theoretical components of the training will be conducted between 0830 hours and 1400 hours and the practical components and demonstration exercises will be conducted between 1400 hours and 1600 hours. These will include scenarios that are likely to occur at the particular workplace.

The Certification Examination will be on the final day at 1400 hours.  This certification is valid for two years. A refreshers course can be completed within three months of the expiration date on the certificate. A follow up and performance review of the basic practical skills can be done in three months and again in six months post-successful completion of the training.

On successful completion of this training programme, participants would have been exposed to both practical and theoretical knowledge that is specific to the health and safety needs of their work environment.
